Spanish Fishing Subsidies Exposed

12.00.00pm GMT Wed 26th Mar 2008

After a meeting with fishermen in Looe, Colin Breed investigated rumours that the Spanish Government subsidises its fishing fleet. The massive increase in fuel costs now puts Cornish fishermen at a distinct disadvantage to their Spanish counterparts. The actions of the Spanish Government fall within EU rules, which allow a "de minimis" subsidy to each fishing enterprise of €30,000 a year.

Colin was "amazed that this subsidy has been allowed and not exposed by our Government. It places our fishermen at a competitive disadvantage and the Government should consider similar support for our fishermen while high fuel charges persist."

He continues to campaign for a fairer prices for Cornish fishermen.
